January 2021
Join Our Pay Claim Campaign
January brings the start of discussions with management about the pay award for April. Did you know that for the year ending 31/03/2020 Thirteen’s turnover was £186 million with an Operating Surplus of £37.6 million? That means that each employee made £25’100 (after wages and pension contributions) for the company.
Most of our colleagues have been working continually throughout the Covid-19 Global Pandemic. Many of us have been facing risks working on the front line while others have been meeting the challenges and incurring the extra costs of working from home. Other Housing Associations offered their employee’s bonuses at Christmas for working during the crisis.
How much increase would you like to see in your pay packet? If you haven’t already, please complete the short Pay Survey in the link below.

Pensions
In the summer Ian Wardle stated in his Podcast that Thirteen would be looking to review our pensions. There have been a number of rumours circulating recently. All that we can confirm is that pensions are in the process of being reviewed and the company will initiate discussions with us in due course.
Working Safely
We’re living through uncertain, worrying times and facing work on the front line is extremely difficult. Please ensure you are following Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures and wearing PPE. If you are required to work in any situation where you fear for your Health and Safety either mentally or physically you are protected by Section 44 of The Employment Rights Act. If you feel you need to use this legislation call your line manager and state: “As per Section 44 of the Employment Rights Act I reasonably believe there is a circumstance of danger which is serious and imminent and I am taking appropriate steps to protect myself or other persons from the danger. Also, Section 100 makes it unlawful for me to be dismissed for this course of action” Then contact one of your Unite Representatives.
Branch News
In our last Branch Meeting in September, it was agreed that we would donate to a fund set up to assist FENASOL (The National Federation of Employees’ and Workers’ Unions in Lebanon) in their work to support those who lost their homes and livelihoods in the Beirut explosion in August.
After a request from one of our members we also agreed to contribute to the cost of kits for Kader Athletic Under 10’s team and we’re now proud sponsors!
A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Christmas Appeal. Our Branch took part in Unite’s Christmas Appeal helping members and people in our community who are struggling to make ends meet. We collected four huge boxes full of food and received cash and shopping voucher donations which we delivered to Foodbanks across the three boroughs. Thank you.
