Save free TV licences for over 75s

For over a million of the oldest people in our country, television is their main form of company. Loneliness is a growing problem in the UK, with two thirds of people reliant on TV for company in lieu of real social interactions. 

But despite having previously funded free TV licences for the over 75s, the government is now refusing to do so. The free TV licence provides a vital service and this is a huge act of betrayal by ministers.

Only pensioners who claim Pension Credit are now entitled to a free TV licence.

Removing the free TV licence for over 75s in the middle of a pandemic is particularly cruel. 

Many older people have been left isolated and frightened by months of lockdown. 

Substantial numbers of over 75s do not have the internet and it is vital that they have access to news and public health announcements.

The right to a TV licence should not be means tested. 

Unite is demanding that the government steps in and gives ALL over 75s a free TV licence.
